Frequently Asked Questions
The Ghost Hunts & Evening Experiences
Is Stormy Ridge Frightmare Farm a haunted house?
No. We do not operate a commercial haunted house with rubber masks, strobes, or actors jumping out to startle you. Our ghost hunts are authentic, narrative-driven walking investigations grounded in real local history, 19th-century county records, and the documented past of our farm.
What is the recommended age for the ghost hunts?
Because the investigations involve walking after dark, real historical accounts, and investigative equipment, we generally recommend our evening ghost hunts for ages 12 and up. However, parents know their kids best. If your child is intrigued by history and comfortable outdoors in the dark without jump scares, they are welcome. Younger children are always welcome on the farm during daytime and early evening hours for the playground and family activities.
What should I wear and bring on a ghost hunt?
Wear sturdy walking shoes or boots suitable for uneven farm ground, and dress in layers—autumn nights on the ridge get cold quickly. Flashlights are permitted, though we ask that you keep beams pointed down to preserve night vision. Feel free to bring your own handheld ghost-hunting equipment (such as EMF meters or voice recorders) if you have them.
Camping & Property Guidelines
What types of camping do you offer?
We offer seasonal, rustic destination camping that lets you stay directly on the property. It’s an authentic outdoor experience—pitch your tent, enjoy an unpolluted night sky, and wake up right next to regional trail networks. Advance reservations are required through our online booking system.
Are campfires allowed?
Yes, campfires are permitted in designated fire rings only. Firewood must be sourced locally or purchased directly at the farm to protect our local forests from invasive pests. Fires must never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished before turning in or leaving the site.
What are your quiet hours?
Quiet hours run from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM. While we host evening gatherings and entertainment in The Crypt, we ask all guests to respect the peace and privacy of fellow campers once the venue closes for the night.
Are pets allowed?
Well-behaved dogs on leashes (max 6 feet) are welcome at campsites and general outdoor farm grounds. Pets must be cleaned up after at all times and cannot be brought inside The Crypt during live performances or onto walking ghost investigations.
Outdoor Trails & State Land Access
How close is the farm to Letchworth State Park?
We are a scenic drive away from Letchworth State Park (the “Grand Canyon of the East”), making Stormy Ridge a convenient overnight basecamp. You can easily spend your morning exploring the park's waterfalls, gorges, and scenic overlooks, then head back to the farm for an evening around the fire.
What state lands are nearby for hiking and outdoor recreation?
Our property is situated right in the heart of Western New York’s public land corridor, surrounded by state forests and wildlife management areas such as Canaseraga State Forest, Ossian State Forest, and Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area. These public lands offer thousands of acres for hiking, bird watching, hunting (in season), and off-grid exploration.
Can I hike directly from the farm onto state lands?
State forest trailheads, access roads, and parking turnouts are located just a short drive from our gates. Our staff is happy to share maps and point you toward local access points depending on whether you are looking for a casual wooded walk or rugged backcountry terrain.
Daytime Activities, Amenities & The Crypt
What is there for kids and families to do during the day?
Families can take advantage of our outdoor playground, lawn games, open picnic spaces, and seasonal family activities. Daytime visits are designed to be relaxed, open-air, and fully multi-generational.
What is "The Crypt"?
The Crypt is our signature indoor social and entertainment building. It serves as our seasonal hub for live acoustic music, storytelling, and indoor gathering out of the weather.
Is food or shopping available on site?
Yes! We have a curated retail shop featuring handmade seasonal goods, apparel, and artisan crafts. Concessions and seasonal refreshments are available during operational hours and scheduled events.
